Define
Problem Statement:

In a small team design a multi-function printer for use in a small office or home office. Collaborate with Xerox designers to develop a multi-function printer that will made use of recent advances in technology. The design should also set a new style for this market that can be used to define a new identity for a series of theses types of products.

Issues List:
This brainstorming technique helped our team determine possible functions this product might need incorporated into it.
• Is the unit portable?
• Will the product be modular?
• What size keypad is necessary?
• Flat bed or sheet feed scanner?
• Should there be a video screen?
• Should the product incorporate a video out put?
• Can there be a vertical printing system?
• Can a ink jet print on its side?
• How small of a foot print is possible?
• Will a small footprint save office space?
• Can all user interfaces be located in the front?
• What is the print quality?
• Can you spill things on it?
• What is the scanner quality?
• Will the product be easily distinguished?
• What is the speed of all operations?
• Can the product be easily serviced and maintained?
• Can this product accommodate 11"x17" format?
• Can this product print business cards?
• Can this product print envelopes?
• What will this product cost?
• Can the product dispense beverages?
• Can this product use a "dry ink"?
• Can the product hover?
• Will it talk to you?
• Can you drop it?
Objectives:

• Size - Footprint smaller than comparative existing multi-function printer.
• Intuitive use - Symbolic coding of each function with the use of color, symbols, pictures, and textures.
• Easy to service/maintain - User can replace print cartridge, clean scanner, and un-jam paper.
• Stand alone - Through the incorporation of a small screen and all necessary controls the fax and copier functions will not require a computer for use.
• Make product standout in current market - Unusual operation and/or design using unique colors, textures, shape, paper path, and/or function.
• Ability to use multiple paper formats - Scanner and printer able to handle paper sizes anywhere in between business card size (2"x3.5") to the standard 8.5"x11".

Research:

Most of the research my team and I did centered around printers, scanners, and copiers, we researched size, price, functions, and we looked at a lot of new innovations in all these fields. This research helped us set up what functions the multi-function printer would require and what type of technology we would incorporate with this product. This type of research also allowed us to set up realistic size requirements for all the components of the printer. Each of us also developed trend boards to help us focus on current styles that would help draw more interest to this product's styling. One of the main benefits of this research was that it helped us with color selection, each team member's board included brushed aluminum surfacing and/or color.

Above is the trend board I developed, one of the elements that our team tried to introduce to the multi-function printer was speed. The idea that speed is one of the key selling points for any computer product, this lead our design into a fast paced car like styling.

Some web resources we used to define the technology used in current products.
